Multispectral imaging with vertical silicon nanowires

چکیده
Multispectral imaging is a powerful tool that extends the capabilities of the human eye. However, multispectral imaging systems generally are expensive and bulky, and multiple exposures are needed. Here, we report the demonstration of a compact multispectral imaging system that uses vertical silicon nanowires to realize a filter array. Multiple filter functions covering visible to near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths are simultaneously defined in a single lithography step using a single material (silicon). Nanowires are then etched and embedded into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), thereby realizing a device with eight filter functions. By attaching it to a monochrome silicon image sensor, we successfully realize an all-silicon multispectral imaging system. We demonstrate visible and NIR imaging. We show that the latter is highly sensitive to vegetation and furthermore enables imaging through objects opaque to the eye.

Harnessing the Nano-optics of Silicon Nanowires for Multispectral Imaging
IEEE PHOTONICS SOCIETY NEWSLETTER 11 Abstract—Given the considerable interest that has existed for silicon nanowires lately, it is surprising how little attention has been generally paid to the dramatic influence that waveguiding and resonance phenomena can have upon their optical properties. This paper reviews recent work at Harvard University on the optical properties of silicon nanowires. We...
متن کاملMultispectral absorptance from large-diameter InAsSb nanowire arrays in a single epitaxial growth on silicon
Vertical III-V nanowires are capable of resonant absorption at specificwavelengths by tuning the nanowire diameter, thereby exceeding the absorption of equivalent thinfilms. These propertiesmay be exploited to fabricatemultispectral infrared (IR) photodetectors, directly integratedwith Si, without the need for spectral filters or vertical stacking of heterostructures as required in thinfilm dev...
متن کاملUltrahigh-density silicon nanobridges formed between two vertical silicon surfaces
We report simultaneous lateral growth of a high density of highly oriented, metal-catalyzed silicon nanowires on a patterned silicon substrate and bridging of nanowires between two vertical silicon sidewalls, which can be developed into electrodes of an electronic device. After angled deposition of catalytic metal nanoparticles on one of two opposing vertical silicon surfaces, we used a metal-c...
متن کاملFabrication, characterization, and kinetic study of vertical single-crystalline CuO nanowires on Si substrates
We report here on the first study of the growth kinetics of high-yield, vertical CuO nanowires on silicon substrates produced by the process of thermal oxidation. The length of the CuO nanowires could be tuned from several to tens of micrometers by adjusting the oxidation temperature and time. The grown CuO nanowires were determined to be single-crystalline with different axial crystallographic...
متن کاملFabrication of vertically stacked single-crystalline Si nanowires using self-limiting oxidation.
A simple method for fabricating vertically stacked single-crystal silicon nanowires on standard bulk silicon wafers is presented. The process uses inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching to create silicon fins with uneven yet controllable vertical profiles. The fins are then thermally oxidized in a self-limiting process, and the narrow regions are completely consumed to create multiple nanowir...
